to those friends reeling from the tumblr news and unfamiliar still with this part of the decentralized internet, lemme tell you all about hubzilla:
hubzilla lets you run your feed as a paysite, if you want.
by default, in hubzilla, you can run a blog feed like tumblr. you can also publish and organize articles, run a wiki, build whole websites, run chatrooms and so on, all encrypted, all as open or locked down as you want. you can also syndicate across hubs, in case one goes down (as happens in the decentralized web since none of us are billionaires) and you don’t lose your connections when you do.
you can pass out guest tokens to people who aren’t members, so they can access what you want them to even without registering – and you can change or revoke their permissions whenever you want. hubzilla’s v “privacy first” in that way.
to recap: you get a blog feed, you can build sites, you can write wikis, you can publish articles separately from your feed, you can reblog others’ posts, you can finely tune permissions on every single object you put up, you can run paysites, you can revoke anyone’s permission to see your private posts, photos, articles and sites at any time.
you can sign up at any of the following:
